The Impact Player rule in the IPL has not been without its share of controversy. Many cricketers have voiced their discontent, citing the under-utilisation of allrounders as a major concern. This rule, initially seen as a catalyst for high scores, has become a heated debate topic among former players.
Take the case of Shivam Dube, the fast bowling allrounder for CSK. Despite his impressive record of 46 wickets in T20s, he has been limited to the role of a lower-order hitter, often coming in as the impact sub for a bowler. This under-utilisation of his bowling skills is a direct result of the Impact Player rule.
How the Impact Player Rule is Doing Cricket More Harm Than Good
While there are calls to revisit the rule, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah backed the innovation, stating that the rule was introduced as a ‘test case’ but has provided additional playing opportunities to two Indian players.

“Impact player rule was brought in as a test case. On the bright side, it provides additional playing opportunities to two Indian players. Isn’t it important that two Indian players get a chance? The game is also becoming more competitive”, said Shah during an interaction with select media at the BCCI office on Thursday, as reported by PTI.
Shah, though, is open to discussing the feasibility of the rule if players feel that it should be done away with. “But still, if the players feel that this is not alright, we will speak on it. However, no one has said anything about it yet. After the IPL and the World Cup, we will have a meeting and decide,” said the BCCI secretary.
“After the World Cup, we will consult with players, franchises and broadcasters and decide the future course. It’s not a permanent rule nor am I saying we will move past it,” he added.
