Hometown Hero Ravichandran Ashwin Scores Ton at Chepauk Against Bangladesh on Opening Day
Ashwin produced an incredible innings to bring up his century at his own backyard in Chennai against the touring Bangladesh on the opening day of the first Test between the sides.

Ravichandran Ashwin produced an incredible innings to bring up his century at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday on the opening day of the Test against Bangladesh.

The all-rounder came up with a brilliant counter-attacking inning to take India to a score of 339/6 at stumps on Day 1 of the Test after a disastrous start to the game by the Indian top-order.

India were put to bat by Bangladesh and the visitors drew first blood with the early dismissal of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who was scalped by Hasan Mahmud for just six runs as Najmul Hossain held on to the catching opportunity offered up by the captain.

Shubman Gill went back to the hut without getting off the mark as Mahmud picked up his second of the day with Liton Das taking the catch on the occasion. Things went from bad to worse for the hosts as star Indian batter Virat Kohli was dismissed for six runs by Mahmud.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant put up a 62-run stand for the fourth wicket to address the slide in the top order.

Pant fell to Mahmud for 39 runs, as the Bangla pacer claimed his fourth wicket of the day. Jaiswal was next to go as Nahid Rana bagged the wicket of the young southpaw, but only after the batter had crossed the fifty-run milestone.

KL Rahul, who added 16 runs to the tally, was scalped by Hasan Miraz as India stood at 144/6 before Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja went on the count attack.

The Indian duo put up a partnership of 195 runs to settle the nerves and take the hosts to a dominant position at the end of play on the opening day.

Ashwin remained unbeaten at 102 runs as the umpire flicked the bails off the stumps to indicate the end of the day’s play, while Jadeja stood unbeaten at 86.
