'At Some Point in Time They’re Going to Come Good,' Brian Lara Backs Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli Opening

Team India stormed into the Super 8 of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies with three straight wins in their opening three games of Group A.

India managed to outclass Ireland, Pakistan and hosts USA in their concluded assignments to secure progress to the next stages of the ICC showpiece. However, their opening has come under scrutiny after thin showings in the recent games.

India have opted to open the batting with skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli, who have so far failed to make an impression in the 20-over spectacle.

With calls to being in attacking southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal to open the innings and push Kohli to No.3 growing, Windies legend Brian Lara opined that India would fare well to stick to their current combination.

“Definitely, India had the option to play a left-right opening partnership. They went with two great players, two guys who’ve done a great job for India with the bat for their individual franchise as well in terms of the captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,” Lara began.

“I think they’ve got to stick with it as you just said if you do make changes on top, Virat Kohli has to come in the order a little bit lower and that’s going to upset things there,” the 55-year-old continued.

He added that India would do well to back their combination and their openers at the top to delivery.

“I believe that the combination India is having and India has to back the two of them,” he added.

He stated it was only a matter of time before Rohit and Virat click and deliver as they have been known to do, and added that it wouldn’t be wise to alter things when on a winning streak.

“At some point in time, they’re going to come good with conditions, the batting conditions in the USA were not the very best. I don’t believe you start making changes especially if you’re winning,” Lara opined.

India will travel to Florida to close out their group stage assignments with their final Group A fixture against Canada on the 15th of June.
