The second T20I between Australia and West Indies at Adelaide Oval on Sunday turned out to be an eventful encounter, full of entertainment and drama. The first innings saw a Glenn Maxwell mayhem where the ace all-rounder smashed a record-equaling 5^th T20I hundred. He played a blistering 120-run knock off just 55 balls as Australia set the tourists a 242-run target. The West Indies fell 34 runs short and lost the game but their chase witnessed a bizarre incident that has sparked a debate.

The incident unfolded in the 19^th over when the West Indies needed more than fifty runs with just one wicket left. Alzarri Joseph looked to take a quick single off the third ball bowled by Spencer Johnson but was caught short of his crease.

Joseph had driven towards cover where Mitchell Marsh grabbed the ball and threw straight to Spencer at the non-striker’s end. The Aussie quick dislodged the bails before the Windies tail-ender made his ground. But to everyone’s surprise, Joseph was ruled ‘not out’.

Marsh and Johnson had started celebrating after watching the replays on the big screen but it was short-lived as umpires said the batter wasn’t given out as the hosts didn’t appeal. But Tim David was livid as he said, “This is ridiculous. I appealed.”

What does the rule say?

“Neither umpire shall give a batter out, even though he/she may be out under the Laws, unless appealed to by a fielder. This shall not debar a batter who is out under any of the Laws from leaving the wicket without an appeal having been made. Note, however, the provisions of 31.7,” the rule says.

Maxwell equals Rohit’s record

Maxwell blasted a record-equaling century as Australia beat West Indies by 34 runs on Sunday and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in its three-match series. It was also Maxwell’s fifth T20 international century, equaling the record held by India’s Rohit Sharma.

Maxwell smashed an unbeaten 120 off 55 balls, with eight sixes and 12 fours, and shared a 92-run stand with Tim David (31 off 14 balls) to propel Australia to 241-4 and the highest T20 international score at Adelaide Oval.

“We’re extremely lucky to have (Maxwell) in our team,” Australia captain Mitch Marsh said. “He’s a match winner, game changer and people come to watch him.”
