Ajinkya Rahane Scores Maiden Century For Leicestershire In County Championship

Rahane came out to bat at No. 4 for Leicestershire in the second inning, and with the help of 13 fours and one six, he scored 102 runs from 192 balls.

Former Indian Test vice captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has been out of the Indian Test team for more than a year now, has scored a century for Leicestershire in the County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan on Sunday (September 1). The right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 4 for the Lewis Hill-led side in the match taking place at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, and with the help of 13 fours and one six, he scored 102 runs from 193 balls in the second inning.

It was his 40th century in first-class cricket and first one for Leicestershire. The 36-year-old right-handed batter, who was not considered for the Duleep Trophy 2024 by the BCCI selectors last month, had earlier scored 42 runs in the first inning.

Rahane, who last played for India against the West Indies in the two-match Test series last year in July, has scored a century at the right time as BCCI selectors are set to announce India’s squad for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh in the coming days.

India will face the Asian rivals in a two-match series at home. The first Test is scheduled to take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from September 19 onwards, and the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur will host the second match from September 27.

After facing Bangladesh, India will take on New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home and then fly to Australia for a five-match Test series. The 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to start on November 22 in Perth, and the next four matches will be played in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, respectively.

Rahane was the captain of the Indian team in the last three Tests of the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, and under his leadership, India won the Melbourne and Brisbane Tests to win their second ever Test series on Australian soil.

Rahane was appointed as India’s captain after Virat Kohli returned back to India at the end of the first Test to be with his wife Anushka Sharma as they welcomed their first child.
