Mkts end higher: Oil & gas stocks surge
Sensex hits a lifetime high of 14,325.92 pts during the day's trade – its fourth record high in the last five days.

New Delhi: Led by gains in top private firm Reliance Industries Ltd on expectation of good third quarter earnings, Sensex rose 0.61 per cent on Thursday to a record close.

The BSE benchmark index Sensex closed up 86.41 points at 14,217.75 after hitting a lifetime high of 14,325.92 during the day.

Similarly the broad based Nifty was up 32.60 points or 0.80 per cent at 4,109.05.

Markets ran smartly throughout the day on the back of spectacular Q3 numbers coming from across the sectors. The BSE FMCG and oil & Gas stock surged.

About 1,334 shares have advanced, 1,285 shares declined, and 52 shares are unchanged.

HDFC, ONGC, L&T, Dabur India and VSNL were top gainers on the indices.

Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, Oriental Bank and Reliance Comm are top losers on the indices.

The BSE Auto index was up 0.14 per cent or 7.97 points at 5,693.05. Apollo Tyres, Exide Industrie, Ashok Leyland, Bharat Forge and Maruti Udyog gained.

The BSE Capital Good index closed up 0.61 per cent or 57.50 points at 9,496.16. L&T, BHEL, Praj Industries and Aban Offshore moved up.

The BSE FMCG index was up 1.13 per cent or 21.70 points at 1,934.65. Dabur India, Nirma, ITC, HLL and Britannia surged.

The BSE Healthcare index was up 0.27 per cent or 10.65 points at 3,935.12. Biocon, Pfizer, Nicholas Pirama, Glenmark and Wockhardt ended in green.

The BSE IT index closed up 0.61 per cent or 32.71 points at 5,408.47. HCL Tech, Satyam, Wipro, HCL Info and Patni Computer advanced.

The BSE Oil & gas index surged 1.62 per cent or 106.49 points at 6,664.13. IOC, Petronet LNG, ONGC, HPCL and GAIL flared.

However, the BSE Bankex closed down 0.47 per cent or 34.88 points at 7,464.89. ICICI Bank, Oriental Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Union Bank and Bank of Baroda slipped.

The BSE Metal index ended down 0.72 per cent or 65.47 points at 9,069.53. JSW Steel, Tata Steel, JindalStainless, Sesa Goa and Mah Seamless closed negative.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10,164.06 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 39,532.81 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5,054.42 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 54,751.29 crore.
