IOL ties up with BSNL for Internet TV
BSNL has committed to the Centre to cover over 1000 cities and 20,000 villages under its broadband map.

New Delhi: IOL Broadband Ltd said on Wednesday it has tied up with State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to launch Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).

Internet Protocol Television, or IPTV, uses the Internet as the transport platform to send video signals to television using high-speed connections.

Earlier on the day BSNL, which had declared 2007 as its 'Year of Broadband', had said it is looking for partners to provide the IPTV services.

In order to facilitate e-governance, BSNL has committed to the Centre to cover over 1000 cities and 20,000 villages under its broadband map, with an upgraded connectivity speed of up to two MBPS.

With this declaration, IOL’s shares extended gains to rise 5 per cent on the BSE.

IOL Broadband has also signed a revenue sharing agreement with Anytime, a consortium of Hollywood studios such as Walt Disney Co, FOX, Warner Brothers, and Universal for providing access to films.

IOL has already started trial services of IPTV on BSNL's broadband network in Bangalore.
