Markets witnessed a smart rally on Tuesday. The Sensex closed up 197.27 points or 2.17 per cent at 9283.16.

New Delhi: Markets witnessed a smart rally on Tuesday. It was the biggest intraday gain for the Sensex since September 26. All BSE sectoral indices ended with gains. The BSE Oil & Gas, Bankex, Capital Goods and Auto Index ended up over 2.35 per cent.

The Sensex closed up 197.27 points or 2.17 per cent at 9283.16. It touched an intraday high of 9297.07 and an intraday low of 9020.80.

The Nifty closed up 56.30 points or 2.05 per cent at 2805.90. It touched an intraday high of 2812.60 and an intraday low of 2725.70.

The CNX Midcap Index closed up 78.05 points or 2.01 per cent at 3957.85. It touched an intraday high of 3961.20 and an intraday low of 3874.75.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed up 110.14 points or 1.94 per cent at 5778.16. The BSE Midcap Index closed up 1.73 per cent at 4337.19.

The market breadth was positive, about 1677 shares advanced, 720 shares declined, and 62 shares remained unchanged. The total market turnover was at Rs 38569.06 crore.

Reliance, BHEL, Reliance Energy, Satyam, Tata Motors, Tata Chemicals, VSNL, M&M and MTNL were the biggest index gainers.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs 290.16 crore in F&O and Rs 295.90 crore in Nifty Futures on December 26.

Reliance group stocks bounced back on Tuesday. Reliance Industries, Reliance Energy and Reliance Capital gained over 4 per cent.

The BSE Oil & Gas Index outperformed the other indices in the late trade. It closed up 2.83 per cent or 119.40 points at 4334.37 amid buying in Reliance, Gail, BPCL, HPCL, Petronet LNG, Chennai Petroleum, MRPL, Kochi Refineries and IOC.

Banking stocks like Canara Bank, UTI Bank, Bank of India, ICICI Bank, PNB, Union Bank, Bank of Baroda, SBI, Andhra Bank and Kotak Mahindra also firmed up. The BSE Bankex closed up 2.55 per cent or 124.99 points at 5024.85.

Capital goods stocks including Bharat Electronics, Carborundum, BHEL, KEC International, BEML, Alfa Laval, Alstom Projects, Siemens and L&T also moved up. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 2.39 per cent or 133.36 points or 5710.35.

The BSE Auto Index closed up 2.36 per cent at 4237.70 as gains were seen in M&M, Ashok Leyland, Tube Investment, TVS Motor, Tata Motors, Escorts, Maruti Udyog, Bharat Forge, Cummins, Sundram, Hero Honda and Asahi India.

FMCG stocks including McDowell, Tata Tea, ITC, HLL, Colgate, Britannia and Shaw Wallace also ended higher. The BSE FMCG Index closed up 1.96 per cent at 1623.67.

The BSE IT Index closed up 1.94 per cent at 3715.11 due to buying in Hexaware Tech, Satyam, Flextronics, MphasiS BFL, Patni Computer, TCS, HCL Info and Infosys.

Consumer Durables stocks like Samtel Color, Titan Industries, Su-Raj Diamonds, Videocon International and BPL also surged. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 1.86 per cent at 3155.70.

Metal stocks like Sterlite Ind, Sesa Goa, Jindal Saw, Jindal Stainless, Jindal Steel, Tata Steel, Hindustan Zinc, Hindalco and Gujarat NRE Coke also finished in green. The BSE Metal Index closed up 1.85 per cent or 115.34 points at 6355.25.

The BSE Healthcare Index closed up 1.43 per cent at 3051.78 as pharma stocks including Matrix Labs, Aventis Pharma, GSK Pharma, Sterling Biotech, Pfizer, Nicholas Piramal, Glenmark, Aurobindo Pharma and Novartis India also spurted up.

Several cement, hotel, media, paper, shipping, sugar, tea, telecom and textile stocks.
