New Delhi: To overcome the problem of foodgrains storage, the government is building an additional 15 million tonnes capacity in 19 states with help from private enterprenuers.
"Nearly 15 million tonnes capacity is being created under the Private Entrepreneur's Guarantee Scheme", Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in his budget speech on Friday.
Out of this, 3 million tonnes of storage capacity will be added by the end of 2011-12 and 5 million tonnes would be added next year, he said.
The Finance Minister said creation of 2 million tonnes of storage capacity in the form of modern silos has already been approved.
India presently has a storage capacity of 62.36 million tonnes for foodgrains.
It is also constructing godowns in North Eastern region with a cost of Rs 568.17 crore to stock food grains and speedy movement of food grains from procuring states to distribution centres.
