New Maruti Suzuki Ignis: All You Need to Know About the Compact Crossover
With a tall height, large wheel arches and a distinctive front and rear end, the Ignis could compete against others of its kind in the Indian market.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis, first unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, was slated to be launched in India during the festive season this year. However, heavy number of Vitara Brezza and Baleno on the production line pushed the launch of the sub-4 compact crossover to next year.

Ignis will now be launched sometime between January - March 2017. Compared to its counterparts sold in Japan, Ignis is likely to be slightly different in terms of styling and a bit short on features. Maruti plan to sell the Ignis only through Nexa dealerships.

With a tall height, large wheel arches and a distinctive front and rear end, the Ignis could compete against others of its kind in the Indian market.

Features

Maruti have given it features making it a premium offering. It is expected to come with touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, LED daytime running lamps, smartphone connectivity and Apple CarPlay, dual airbags and ABS, and reverse camera and parking sensor.

Engine

The Ignis will come with an option of two engines - a modified version of the 1.2-litre K-series petrol unit found on the Swift and Baleno and the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. It'll have two transmission options - a manual and a CVT.

Price and rivals

Maruti have not made any statement regarding Ignis' pricing. However, considering that it will be sold only through Nexa dealerships, a premium price tag could start around Rs. 5.5 lakh.

The Ignis stands to give competition to other compact crossovers like Mahindra KUV100, or indirectly to compact SUVs such as Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Hyundai i20 Activ, Mahindra TUV300, Fiat Avventura and Fiat Urban Cross.
