The Land Rover Defender as we knew it for so long may no longer be in production, but although it's gone it's certainly not forgotten. This genuine icon of the British motor industry is to be celebrated with a specially commissioned 'ultimate' Defender from Kahn Design at this year's London Motor Show between May 4 and 7.
Generally regarded as the world's most iconic off-roader, the Defender was originally launched as the Land Rover Series way back in June 1948. The legendary vehicle adopted the Defender name in 1983, but after a staggering continuous production run of 67 years, the last one rolled off the production line on January 29, 2016.
Kahn Design is an engineering company based in Bradford, England that was founded in 1998 when it started out as a manufacturer of bespoke alloy wheels. In 2003 the company then moved into vehicle design modification and coachbuilding, with customising of Range Rovers and Land Rovers being a core part of the business. Off-road designs have been such a big part of the business that Kahn now has a specialised offshoot company with a showroom on the King's Road in London, the Chelsea Truck Company, which solely concentrates on models such as the Defender, Jeep Wrangler and the Mercedes G-Wagon.Also read: Hyundai Sonata 2018 Model to be Revealed at New York Auto Show
This exclusive one-off Defender is being designed and built in-house by Kahn and will be proudly displayed at the Battersea Park event throughout the weekend. The Defender will follow the highly successful Kahn vehicle design formula, so expect this homage to the world's most recognisable off-roader to bring together a collection of subtle influences to reimagine the legendary Defender with a more contemporary feel.
Afzal Kahn now has an ongoing relationship with the recently relaunched London show, after last year showcasing another Defender project, the ‘London Motor Show Edition,' which was a Santorini Black model with a Chelsea Truck Company styling package, Mondial wheels and Luxurious Hield fabric.
"For the 2016 London Motor Show, I designed a vehicle that celebrates the history and unique personality of the Defender," Kahn explained. "My designs are known for their attention to detail, so I do not want this Defender to be any different.
